Talking heavy bleeding with Olivia

Having your period can look very different from person to person. For some, it means heavy bleeding and intense cramps that seriously affect everyday life. We caught up with our colleague Olivia to hear about her experience – and how period panties have become a helpful part of her routine.

What’s it like living with heavy periods and strong menstrual cramps?

In a way, it just becomes your reality. I’ve never had anything else to compare it to, so for a long time I thought the pain and bleeding were simply how it was supposed to be. Now I know that my period isn’t exactly "normal." I try to plan for a slower pace when I have my period, take care of myself, rest as much as I can, and take painkillers when needed. I also try not to schedule too much during the worst days – just getting through a workday can be more than enough.

What do you find most challenging when it comes to managing the pain and bleeding during your period?

The hardest part is probably feeling like myself. I get very low and exhausted, so life kind of goes on pause for a few days. And then, of course, finding a period product that doesn’t leak, no matter what I do.

Have any products or habits helped you feel better during your period?

Even though I’m tired, I try to stay active during my period – it really helps. Getting extra sleep does me a lot of good too. I’m also thankful for pain relief and medication that help reduce the bleeding. It has made a big difference for me.

What do you usually look for when choosing period products?

Absorbency is number one. I need something that can really handle a heavy flow – but I also want it to feel comfortable. The pads you get after giving birth are basically what I need in terms of absorbency, but wearing them feels bulky. I’ve tried a menstrual cup, but it doesn’t always work because of the cramps.

Have period panties made a difference for you?

They’ve made a huge difference – both in terms of comfort and peace of mind. I don’t have to constantly check or change my protection, and I love that I’m creating less waste. That was one of the main reasons I wanted to try period panties to begin with. On my heaviest days, I carry an extra pair so I can change if I need to. I use the ones with the highest absorbency, and for most days, that’s all I need.
