A teen period story with Åsa 

Heavy flow can make daily activities, especially sports, feel like a constant challenge. Åsa, an active player in women's junior leagues, shares her experience of dealing with a super heavy flow and the creative solutions she came up with to stay comfortable on and off the field. 

How did you manage your heavy flow during practices and games? 
 


With the super heavy flows I had in my teens, I had to come up with solutions in order to continue with soccer, basketball, and floorball practices. First, I used a tampon, then a pad, always black panties, and on top of that (during the first days), black hotpants and then shorts. That layering made me feel safe, and I could focus on performance. I always showered at home, or after everyone else. It was a lot of work, but I got used to it. I wish I’d had the opportunity to try the products available today. 
 


What made you choose that solution? 

Based on the products available, and my own need (that is, protection for very heavy flows), I created a setup with what I had access to. I didn’t want it to stop me from doing sports. Luckily, I was really into these activities, and that made me creative. I was too shy to talk about it, so I just kept going with my system. 
 

What challenges did you face after games and practices?

The biggest challenge was always changing clothes or showering afterwards. I remember being nervous about sitting down or moving from the toilet to the shower. I don’t remember being nervous about the actual games or practices. I can still remember some leaks and how that made me feel.

How do you feel looking back on how you handled it all?

Part of me is proud of my creativity and innovative way of dealing with my own problems. On the other hand, I wish I had talked about it to get help and a more long-term solution.
