A teen period story with Adalmina
Periods can shape the way teens experience sports in more ways than one. In this interview, our colleague Adalmina shares how her period impacted her time horseback riding – and why she’s excited that today’s generation has period panties designed to make it all easier.
Did getting your period change your experience with sports as a teen?
Absolutely. I loved horseback riding, but once I got my period, things changed. Bouncing around in the saddle with a disposable pad? Uncomfortable and honestly, just icky. It was hard to fully enjoy myself or focus on my sport with that kind of distraction. The days I had my period never felt as good as the days I didn’t.

Any advice for teens staying active on their period?
Working out feels good and can help with lesser menstrual cramps, so if those are manageable; just grab your favourite period panties and do the thing you love to do!
But remember that is also totally okay to stay cuddled up in the sofa wrapped in a blanket and a wheat warmer on your stomach if the cramps are terrible. There will be a new, pain free day, another day.
Which period panty is your favourite?
The high waist cotton period panty is my favourite for everyday wear, especially for those first days when the stomach feels swollen, and the cramps are worst. They feel like a hug.
What would you like to say to your younger self?
I’d tell my younger self to not let periods hold me back – that there are better options out there, and I deserve to feel comfortable and confident no matter the time of the month.
