Period panties: 5 things you need to know
What are period panties?
Period panties are: having your period but not having to think about it. Going on with your everyday life without worrying about leaks or discomfort. They are science, made to absorb your menstruation blood, prevent leaks, control smell and wick moisture. Just like your regular underwear, but with built-in period protection. We’ve made it easy to find the best period panties for you and your flow in our period panty guide.
How do period panties work?
Unlike traditional period protection, our panties are made to be used over and over again. Everything comes down to the patented three-layer technology in the gusset of the menstrual underwear, better known as the Engineered Leak Tech™. The three layers draw away blood, absorb it and prevent it from leaking. You can use period panties for everything from heavy periods to small discharges. Read more about it here.
Can you swim in period panties?
Yes, you can. In fact, we have a special collection of period underwear designed for swimming – with built in protection to keep your periods and leaks safe. Our period proof swimwear are ideal as standalone protection for days with low to moderate flow and as backup protection for days with heavier flow. They can hold up to 20 ml of fluid, which equals up to 2 tampons/pads.
The only thing you need to keep in mind is that the gusset that is designed to absorb your period (and other body fluids), will absorb water as well.
To clean your swim period panties after swimming or when on the go, rinse them until the water runs clear and gently squeeze out excess water.
How long can you use period panties?
On average, a typical menstruation equals about 35 ml of blood per cycle. And we have period panties with six different absorbency levels where the most extensive one, the Super, can hold up to 50 ml blood. That's quite a lot if you ask us. All our menstrual underwear are extensively tested and can be worn for up to ten hours without having to change. So, no matter if you’re a heavy or light bleeder, you can feel comfy all day or night long.
The most important thing is that you find an absorbency level that suits your body and needs.
You can read more about finding the right absorbency level for you here.
And how long do period panties last? Well, our underwear are made to last for at least 50 washes, after that the Engineered Leak Tech™ will lose some of its effectiveness. The absorbing function itself though is likely to last longer, as well as the fabric, form and fit. So, if you wear and wash your underwear once per cycle they will last for about four years.
How do you wash period panties?
Both our period panties and our period swimwear can be washed the same way. Rinse them in cold water, wash at 40°C with your regular clothes, hang to dry, and wear them again and again. To preserve their effectiveness and longevity, skip the dryer and fabric softener. Then you’re all set.
