Can I use period panties for a heavy flow?

We design period-proof underwear for all levels of bleeding, from light to heavy periods. The highest absorbency level is called Super and can hold up to 50 ml, which is equivalent to 5 tampons or pads. Heavier bleeding than that is unusual, but we’re all different. And that’s just how it should be.

If you are worried about bleeding more, we recommend that you start by wearing your period underwear at home during a heavy day. That will put the underwear to the test - and put you at ease while you figure out how it works.

Should I combine the period panties with other protection?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes one plus one equals three, and sometimes it doesn’t. As long as the absorbency underwear level is matched with your flow level, additional menstrual protection isn’t necessary. Our period-proof panties are engineered to keep you dry and safe all day.

However, some like to combine their period panties with other menstrual protection over the course of the entire menstruation cycle. This is of course a deeply individual thing, and we encourage you to explore and find your own optimal solution.

What materials are period underwear made of?

The main fabrics in the shell are either recycled polyamide or organic cotton. To get the right type of elasticity, we use low-cure silicone.

In our recycled micro range, 83% of the shell fabric is recycled polyamide. The fabric has an RCS Global Recycling Standard certification, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, as well as Bluesign® approval.

In our organic cotton range, 79% of the shell fabric consists of organic PIMA cotton. The fabric has the OCS Global Recycling Standard certification and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification.

Can period panties replace disposables?

Our period-proof underwear is engineered to replace disposable products and menstrual cups completely. Thorough testing has shown that it's unnecessary to use a tampon, pad or a liner when wearing our panties.

If you prefer, you can combine them with disposables and wear the underwear as a complement. For example, when using tampons or menstrual cups our period-proof underwear with a low absorbency level (5 or 10 ml) can be worn as a backup in case of leakage.

Does period panties smell?

This is one of our most commonly asked questions. And No. They don't. The anti-odour function in our panties works in two ways: 1) antibacterial so that bacteria cannot multiply and 2) odour eliminating so unpleasant odours cannot develop. The anti-odour treatment is applied to our wicking layer and absorbent layer of the gusset.

How many hours can I wear the same pair of period panties for?

Our period-proof underwear is tested extensively and lasts for up to ten hours of wear.

All of our models have the capacity to hold a large amount of menstrual blood. The High period-proof panty can hold up to 40 ml of blood - which is quite a lot, since the total menstrual fluid loss per period is on average 35 ml.

But each body is unique, so the most important thing is that you choose the absorbency level that matches your personal flow level.

How many times can the period panties be used and washed?

Accepted Answer

We believe that good things should last for a long time, and our period panties are made to last for at least 50 washes. So if your underwear is worn and washed once per menstrual cycle, they will last for around four years – which is way above industry standards.

The lifespan of a pair of panties is determined by the Engineered Leak Tech™. The antibacterial and anti-odour treatment of the Engineered Leak Tech™ tends to lose a little bit of effectiveness after 50 washes. The absorbing function itself though is likely to last longer, as well as the fabric, form and fit.

How many period underwear do I need?

Accepted Answer

Our period-proof underwear is washable and can be used again. And again. We recommend starting with 3-5 pairs: that way, you’re covered for an entire menstruation cycle without having to do too much laundry. But every person is unique, with individual flow levels and laundry facilities. So, you can always start with 1-2 pairs to complement your usual protection. That‘s a good way to ease into using a new product - and to find out what works best for you.

Can I use period underwear during nighttime?

Yes, very much so. Regular period-proof underwear will most likely do the job perfectly well during the night. But, depending on your flow level and sleeping position (some of us just can’t keep still, right?) you might need a little extra protection when sleeping. And that's why we created night panties, that come in two different silhouettes:

How do I know when to change period underwear?

Our period panties don't work the same way as disposable tampons or pads do, so you don't normally change them during the day. Our most absorbent period panty can hold up to 50 ml, which is a very large amount of blood - most women bleed 35 ml on average during their period.

Just choose the absorbency level that meets your individual needs (or a higher one if you want to feel extra safe). Then wear the panties for the whole day - or night.

Over time, you’ll get to know how your period panties deal with your own unique flow, and how you can adapt the absorbency level for different days of your cycle. Here are some signs to look out for, so that you know what level you need:

The weight of the gusset: the heavier it is, the fuller it is
The amount of blood traces you see on the wicking layer (the layer closest to the skin)
The stiffness: if the gusset is full, it might feel a bit stiff, as well as thicker than when freshly-washed

How do you wash period underwear after use?

Handle your period-proof panties with care and they will last for a long time. But it’s not that complicated: the only additional step you need to take, compared to washing your regular underwear, is the pre-rinsing.

After you’ve worn them, rinse the panties and then wash at max 40°C, or hand wash with a mild detergent. You can wash them together with other garments. Fabric softener should be avoided, as should the tumble-dryer. We recommend that you use a separate laundry bag to give your panties some extra care. Period underwear love fresh air and prefer to be hung up to dry.

Is washing them in 40°C really enough to keep the period underwear hygienic?

We recommend you wash your period underwear at 40°C, as it will help them last longer while maintaining the function and performance of the underwear. The layers in the gusset of the underwear are treated with an anti-odour and antimicrobial treatment that prevents the growth of bacteria. This means that you can wash your period underwear in cooler temperatures and still keep them clean and hygienic.

How do I store my period panties if I can't wash them immediately?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes life happens, and there's just no way to get everything done the way you planned. But no worries. If you can’t wash your panties immediately, just rinse them right after use and hang them up to dry. After that, just put them in your laundry basket along with your other clothes and wash them when it suits you.

We recommend that you use a separate laundry bag to give your panties some extra care. A good idea is to put your panties in our stylish on-the-go pouch, on-the-go pouch, made of water-repellant material, until you wash them.

Your panties won’t be harmed if they happen to end up in the dryer once or twice. But with that said, repeated tumble drying will reduce the performance and structure of the underwear. So do your best to avoid it – your panties will thank you!

When we produce our panties, we use an anti-bacterial and odour-preventing treatment in the absorbent gusset, called Agion Active XL (antimicrobial substance silver copper zeolite and silver zeolite). The treatment is one of the best currently available. Our period panties are certified by OEKO-TEX®, which means that the products have been evaluated for the content of substances harmful to health.

Why do we use this treatment?

We do this to prevent bacterial growth that leads to the panties starting to smell, which is the biggest concern we have identified in our customer surveys regarding period-proof panties.

Antimicrobial substances are strictly regulated in EU law and the treatment Agion Active XL has been approved for use in textile products.

Should you use intimate care products?

Accepted Answer

Some prefer to just use water, while others like intimate care products. It’s up to you. Water has a higher pH-value then the acidic climate of the vulva, so, as a result, cleansing with water alone can dry the skin or irritate the vulva. By using the neutral Engineered Intimate Wash you can avoid feeling dry. If you are sensitive, or just not a big fan of a water-based wash, we recommend the Engineered Intimate Oil – it can be used as a protective moisturizer or a natural cleanser, with or without water.

Vaginal dryness – what can you do?

Vaginal and vulval dryness can affect women in all stages of life – during pregnancy, menopause, hormonal imbalance or as a side effect of birth control. Vaginal dryness can affect both the vagina and the vulva and can lead to discomfort, soreness, chafing and burning in and around the vulva. Here, Engineered Intimate Oil and Engineered Intimate Balm can come in handy and help relieve the symptoms in the vulva.

Both products contain Oat oil, which locks in moisture by forming a physical barrier to protect the skin. They also contain Bisabolol – which calms and reduces irritation – along with moisturizing almond oil and vitamin E. If the dryness feels severe or is experienced in the vagina, we recommend that you consult a gynecologist.

Are your intimate products free from perfume?

Yes, our intimate care products are free from both synthetic and natural perfumes. We think that perfume in intimate care is pointless, and it can also irritate the vulva – a delicate part of your body. That’s why our products are perfume-free.

Why does the vulva PH matter?

Accepted Answer

While the vagina is self-cleansing, the vulva could use some help. But regular soap often has a higher pH level than your vulva and could upset its pH balance.

Why does this matter?

Maintaining a good pH balance around your vulva helps to protect against infections and irritation.

How do you do that?

The Engineered Intimate Wash is water-based with a balanced pH level that matches the acidic environment of the vulva.

The Engineered Intimate Oil is oil-based without any pH level.

Vulva vs vagina – what’s the difference?
